This is one of the most frequently asked questions of any non-profit. At Swell we only work with non-profit organizations so we hear a lot of their challenges when we train them on how to use our software. And, on almost every call we get this question, “How Do I Get More Donors?” The answer is not as complicated as you might think but it does take some extra effort and concentrated strategy.

Make It Fun and Easy -- The first question I usually ask them back is how are they communicating with existing donors and do they require their current board to bring in new friends and colleagues to an event. Challenging your board to do more and maybe even creating teams among your board can be a very successful way to get them active and involved in the success of your event. But, you also have to make it easy for them. That is one advantage to Swell software – our program lets you sell tickets online, set up table seating, and makes it easy for your board members and members to invite friends to join them.

Ask For More -- Once you have these people in your database, you have the opportunity to cultivate them. Don’t let the end of the event be the end. Invite them to other events, give them opportunities to volunteer, and educate them about your organization and what you do.

Segment Donors -- By this we mean don’t lump them all into the same e-mail or donor bucket. You want them to feel special. Make sure when you collect names from an event you segment your donor audience and tailor your messages to them.

Capture All Gifts -- Let’s be honest. Some donors would rather just make a donation than have to attend another event. We love these donors the most. They don’t want or need recognition, they just want to give you money and support their friend that is on the board or involved in the event. Make sure you are capturing them as well because chances are if they believed in your cause once, they are likely to make a continuing contribution.
